The history of the Lu-
theran Church at Cinkota
looks back for more than
300 years. The church
building, that is more than
900 years old, assures
that God is our refuge and
strength (Psalm 46), in
whom we find shelter even
today.
According to the order of King Stephen in the
11
th
century the first church could be built for
10  neighbouring  villages.    It  used  to  have  a
round plan. The Tartars demolished it in 1241.
After that it was rebuilt and expanded to a sin-
gle-nave church with a semi-circular chancel. A
tower was added in order to control the ene-
mies.
An the time of the Reformation the church  was
changed to be Calvinist. The withdrawing Turks
terminated not only the church but also the
whole settlement.  Cinkota became an unset-
tled place by the end of the 17
th
 century.
In 1699, Tamás Beniczky, the landlord of the
territory  called Slovak-speaking Lutheran set-
tlers from his  lordships from Upper-Hungary
(nowadays Slovakia). They’ve got free practice
of religion and  enough piece of land for their
untroubled life.
The congregation of the newly settled village
renovated the church in 1775/6, and enlarged
it  with  a  cross-nave  in  Baroque  style.  They  put
also a Baroque steeple on the top of the tower.

The Treasures
of the Church

The interior of the
church has got its
present form in 1891
according to the biggest
renovation ever. The altar
was fit then. The theme of the altarpiece is:
Christ on the Mount of Olives (Peter draws his
sward to defend his Master). Its painter was
György Vastagh. The wooden candlesticks were
carved by Rev. Sándor  Prőhle. They show biblical
scenes. The baptistery font is a donation of Rev.
Pál Jezsovics in remem-
brance of his family. Also
the pulpit was built in at
the same time. On the roof
of it a wooden painted
statue is standing.
The organ was designed
then in the workshop of
Sándor Országh.  József
Győri altered it in 1958. The organ was renewed
in its present form in 1986, according to the
plans of Gábor Tra-
jtler
, the former vicar
of the church, later
music director of the
Lutheran Church in
Hungary.
There are three bells in the steeple of the church:

 640 kg / 105 cm / 1989 — by Gombos
 300 kg / 75 cm / 1816 — by Eberhard
160 kg / 62 cm / 1923 — by Szlezák

New Community Home

The old Youth Home was built at the end of the
Second World War. For many decades it gave
place for the up-growing Lutheran generations.
Its consistence has been getting worse badly so
it was necessary to build a new, up-to-date es-
tablishment.  The new Community House, by the
modern parish house, opened its doors for the
congregation in 2009.
This complex building
meets all requirements
for all generations. The
great hall has a church
atmosphere, the small
room is ideal for nu-
merous activities. The tiny room upstairs is very
popular for the Baby-Mum Group. The meeting
room waits for smaller communities. There is
also a „Retro-Club” with old furniture and a table
tennis table for the youth, but we plan to create
a homey common room — with the support of
our Sister-Church in Finland — and we would like
to name it by “Tapiola-Room”.  At the entrance
we’re going to make the office with an archive.
The well-equipped kitchen and the restrooms
are suitable even for bigger events.
